ERW's third languages conference
ERW's third languages conference was a resounding success again this year. It took place on 1 February at the Bay Campus, Swansea, and the aim was to celebrate identity and different languages and cultures as part of the Welsh Government's Global Futures plan. Once again, the event was attended by more than 500 people, including pupils from 42 secondary schools across the region, teachers, students from several universities, and guests from all parts of Wales.
This year's theme was 'Bilingual to Multilingual', and the keynote speakers were Huw Edwards, BBC, Professor Iwan Davies, Professor Mererid Hopwood and Tonia Antoniazzi MP – each emphasising the importance of our bilingualism in order to learn other languages and appreciate diverse cultures in an international world. The workshops included a STEM and Languages careers session, a taste of new languages, for example Russian, Mandarin and Italian, training to become language ambassadors, lessons on a French film for Year 12, a seminar on the future of languages in Wales, and much more.
The fine weather and the outstanding site were the perfect backdrop to the event's positive and enthusiastic atmosphere. Thank you to all our partners who contributed to the success of the day, particularly Swansea University, Routes into Languages, and British Council Wales.
