ERW New and Aspiring Middle Leaders

The ERW new and aspiring middle leaders programme is aimed at those in the primary, secondary or special school sectors and has been designed to offer practical advice about the role of a middle leader. This programme is an integral part of the work of ERW in delivering the regional offer for Professional Learning in partnership with University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Delegates who enrol and participate on the ERW new and aspiring Middle Leaders course can gain credits towards a Graduate Certificate of Professional Learning: Leadership. The programme is designed to offer practical advice about the role of a middle leader.

Positive feedback

Currently in its fourth round, feedback from those who have attended the course has been very positive about the impact on their practice. Lisa Harvey from Coedffranc Primary School in Neath said: “Aspiring middle Leaders training has been an effective and informative way of sharing good practice with colleagues throughout the region and has enabled me to influence my practice at school, question my own leadership skills and reflect how systems and strategies can be implemented so as to improve outcomes for pupils. It has provided me with the opportunity to gain valuable information from guest speakers and network with other leaders. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and recommend the course to other aspiring middle leaders.” Kate Hurst, Llangatwg Community School added: “The course has enabled me to maximise my effectiveness as a middle leader and has given me the confidence not only to improve standards in my department, but to pursue further leadership opportunities within school. The networking group on Hwb has been a useful tool that has enabled me to have discussions with middle leaders across the region.”

The programme

The programme is delivered over four full days. Sessions are run by current, experienced secondary/primary/special school headteachers, senior leaders and specialist regional colleagues. Sarah Perdue, ERW Professional Learning co-ordinator said: “Made up of over 22 guided learning hours through presentations, workshops, debates and practical tasks, it offers people the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills as they prepare for and face the challenges of middle leadership and forms part of the regional strategy for succession planning.” Topics covered in the programme include: What does Middle Leadership look like? ; understanding the current educational climate; effective lesson observation: Using the ERW toolkit; giving feedback and dealing with difficult conversations; understanding the link between self-evaluation and improvement planning and more.
