The ERW Mathematics and Numeracy team consists of centrally based Regional Lead for Literacy & Numeracy and Leaders of Learning for Secondary Mathematics, along with Mathematics and Numeracy specialists based within the six local authorities. We are committed to working purposefully and collaboratively towards achieving consistently high quality teaching and learning experiences with a strong focus on maximising impact on outcomes and raising standards.
We have an effective working partnership with schools and an agreed regional menu of support which schools are able to access according to identified needs. This type of support includes intervention and professional development opportunities that are provided in different ways, including training by subject specialists and school-to-school support. Support is also often bespoke to individual practitioners, key stages, departments and schools’ needs.
Our work is underpinned by sound pedagogical approaches and aligned with National, regional and local priorities, Estyn recommendations and EIG priorities.
The statutory documents and requirements for Mathematics and Numeracy can be viewed here:
- Mathematical Development (link to Foundation Phase PoS)
- National Numeracy Framework (link to Numeracy Framework Nursery to KS4)
We support schools in their implementation and analysis of National Tests (Years 2 to 9). (see guide for parents/carers – link here). We have a strong culture of supporting schools to use test results diagnostically to identify strengths and areas for development, thus enabling schools to meet pupils’ specific mathematical needs and use this to inform their planning.

Times Tables Rock Stars
ERW funds a subscription for each and every school in the region to a programme which is carefully structured to improve knowledge and recall of times tables facts. www.ttrockstars.com. All pupils within the region have a pupil login and password created for them. (can we add TT rock stars logo here?)
There are many resources within the Hwb platform which can be used by schools and their pupils to develop understanding of Mathematical concepts as well as digital competency skills. www.hwb.wales.gov.uk
