Attendance support for schools

Education through Regional Working (ERW) have an attendance group that consists of managers of the Education Welfare Service or equivalent and have embedded the ERW non-attendance systems into all schools in the consortium.

This process was developed utilising the legislation and guidance such as the Education Act 1996, All Wales Attendance Framework 2010, Inclusion and Pupil Support Doc 2016 and WG attendance codes 2010. The process ensures that all schools adhere to legislation and guidance to show consistency of practice in monitoring attendance and tracking of persistent absentees for safeguarding purposes.

The process ensures that schools adhere to the legislation and guidance with regard to registers, that school have active attendance policies, that there are clear systems for monitoring vulnerable groups, using data pro-actively and ensuring systems in place for daily monitoring of persistent absence.

The group members and their teams also support schools with the implementation of the process, to offer routine advice to address any issues raised by the child and/or family regarding any difficulties that might prevent regular attendance and to ensure they meet their legal obligations.

There has been a steady rise in attendance across the consortium and a reduction in persistent absences. This has been achieved by schools working hard to address the persistent absenteeism using the ERW non-attendance process and having a consistent approach across the region.
