Professional Learning Opportunity for Teaching Assistants.

 

Every Educational Professional has the opportunity to develop their skills and experience through professional learning. Depending on your experience and previous training you should be able to identify a suitable development programme appropriate for you. The Teaching Assistants Learning Pathway has been developed to support Teaching Assistants identify and access a development programme appropriate to their current need.

A national programme of professional learning has been developed for Teaching Assistants across Wales which is being offered by all Regional Consortia.

·         Awareness raising Sessions for HLTA Assessment (Twighlight)

HLTA

People who have experience of leading whole classes and have met the current standards for HLTA.

 

·         HLTA Assessment Programme. (Spring & Autumn)

·         HLTA National Conference.

Specialised Teaching Assistant

People who have extended responsibility for significant aspects of work.

 

 

·         Opportunity to train as; Programme Provider or HLTA Assessor.

 

 

Details of these professional Learning Opportunities are outlined below. There is no cost to individuals or schools for these programmes and in many cases schools will be offered release costs to allow Teaching Assistants to attend.

 

What is HLTA status?  

Higher level teaching assistants undertake a wide variety of roles – some work across the curriculum, some act as specialist assistants for a specific subject or department – the work varies according to the needs, type and age-phase of the school. 

  • In all cases HLTA have at least one specific area of expertise in the development of learning and well-being of children and young people.
  • In all cases HLTA work with individuals, small groups and whole classes to lead learning.
  • HLTA status is awarded by Welsh Government to individuals who have proved that they meet the National Requirements for HLTA. (Standards) 
    • Achieved a qualification on first language welsh or English / literacy and mathematics/numeracy at level 2 of the national qualifications framework equivalent to GCSE A-C, or above and they must be able to provide proof of the details of those qualifications
    • Sufficient experience to provide evidence that they meet the Requirements in relation to the HLTA status
    • Have had experience of teaching a whole class without a teacher being present
    • The endorsement and support of the headteacher

NEW NATIONAL TRAINING FOR ASPIRING HLTAs  

In addition to the twilight Information sessions full day Aspiring HLTA days are being held for teaching assistants who are interested in following the HLTA Assessment Programme in 2018-19. These days are an opportunity for you to receive more extensive information about the HLTA programme and what is required in order to apply. It will cover such information as; providing evidence of meeting the requirements, the experiences of previous HLTA candidates; how to get Level 2 qualifications locally (English/Welsh/Maths); changes in Education etc. It will also provide opportunity to network and develop professionally with other Teaching Assistants from other schools and settings from across the region.

  • Attendees will be able to claim release costs for their school.
  • A maximum of 2 candidates per school are eligible to apply per event.
  • Individuals must register their own attendance.

 Practicing Teaching Assistant Programme

 

Regional consortia are offering training for teaching assistants who have been in post for at least three to five years and who would welcome an update on the changing context of the profession. This national programme will be delivered regionally by ERW. The programme will provide information to do with the professional standards, current relevant strategies to support their practices and a range of ideas and strategies to inspire professionalism back in school. The programme will cover:

  • The role of a teaching assistant and how to maximise professional impact
  • Policies and frameworks supporting practice
  • Changing contexts
  • Developing good listening, questioning and feedback for learners
  • Supporting and challenging every learner appropriately and adapting to all needs
  • New Professional Standards for Assistants to Teaching,
  • The Teaching Assistant Learning Pathway.
  • New Curriculum for Wales
  • This is a two day programme and release costs will be paid to schools.
  • This is available to Teaching Assistants with 3 – 5 years’ experience.
  • Individuals must register their own attendance.
  • A maximum of 2 candidates per school are eligible to apply per event.

Digital Skills Training for Practicing Teaching Assistants

We are currently offering opportunity for our Practicing Teaching Assistants to update their digital skills in order to support the Digital Competence Framework in Schools. This is a one day programme aimed at supporting Teaching Assistants with the delivery of the DCF in schools.

Teaching Assistants who have specialised skills of extensive experience are welcome to submit a submission of interest to train as a provider to other training programmes. Where these Specialised Teaching Assistants also have HLTA status they are welcome to submit a request to train as an HLTA Assessor.
