Observing Children with Attachment Difficulties in School – Using the Observation Checklist
30 Secondary School ALNCOS and teachers attended a successful training session on using the Observation Checklist for young people with attachment difficulties with the checklist’s co-creator Helen Worrall on 14 th July 2017 in the Halliwell in Carmarthen. The training was organised by ERW as part of the Attachment Aware Schools Project. The training focused on understanding how the young person’s earliest experiences can impact on their behaviour in the classroom, and the different ways in which this can manifest. Helen’s approach was very much focused on the school setting and she offered many practical strategies to help the young person settle in the classroom. The training gave the attendees opportunity to use the Checklist, which is available in Welsh and English and can be found in the Prosiect Ysgolion ag Ymwybyddiaeth o Ymlyniad/ERW Attachment Aware Schools Project Network Group on Hwb. One participant commented: ‘ The checklist will make a huge impact within school’, and another said that the session was (f)ully relevant and engaging. Will definitely be using the checklist in September!’. Another participant noted that, ‘ Helen was a fantastic presenter who was very knowledgeable but also delivered the course in a very teacher friendly manner’ .
Further training sessions are organised for the autumn term.
