Governor Support

Introduction

Governors’ have an essential role in driving continuous improvement, setting ambitious targets for school improvement and monitoring progress in achieving the best outcomes for learners.

In order to work effectively, school governing bodies need to be well informed. A wide group of professionals from ERW and the Local Authority offer a range of support, training, challenge and intervention to ensure the highest standards of educational achievement are met.

All school governors should know and understand their roles and legal responsibilities and how these fit in with the responsibilities of the head teacher, the local authority and the Welsh Government.

Why have Governing Bodies?

To help schools provide the best possible education for their pupils by:

  • setting the school’s vision and strategic aims, agreeing plans and policies, and making effective use of resources
  • monitoring and evaluating performance, to support and challenge the headteacher in managing the school
  • ensuring the school is accountable to the children and parents it serves, to its local community, to those who fund and maintain it, as well as to the staff employed.
